Cruising Reimagined...

When Explora Journeys — the world’s newest luxury cruise line — announced its mission to reinvent ocean travel, I was intrigued. Could a cruise really feel more like a boutique hotel experience at sea? I had the chance to find out for myself on a sailing from Istanbul to Genoa, and spoiler alert: it was every bit as dreamy as it sounds.
Along the way, we dropped anchor at sun-drenched hideaways like Paros and Porto Santo Stefano, while also soaking up the charm of iconic ports like Naples and Palermo. It was that perfect mix of timeless favourites and off-the-radar gems — a route that felt both luxurious and personal.
From the moment I stepped aboard Explora I, it was clear this wasn’t your typical cruise ship. The design — by legendary British architect and superyacht designer Martin Francis — leans into the elegance of a private yacht. Sleek lines, sophisticated interiors and spacious public areas created an immediate sense of calm. Even at full capacity, the ship never felt crowded. No queues. No chaos. Just serene, open space and a quiet kind of luxury.
In fact, Explora I doesn’t just sail— she glides. And she carries with her the atmosphere of a chic hotel at sea. The lobby bar in particular feels more like an intimate five-star lounge than anything you’d expect on the water.
Let’s Talk About the Food…
Now, onto the pièce de résistance — the food. Dining on Explora I isn't just a tick-box exercise between ports — it's a destination in itself.
More than once, I found myself saying: "This is the best [insert dish] I’ve ever tasted!" — and I meant it. Each of the onboard restaurants has its own personality, vibe, and standout dishes:
Med Yacht Club – The Dover Sole, filleted right at the table, was a masterclass in simplicity done well.
Marble & Co. Grill – Hands down the best filet steak I’ve ever had, paired with a tableside Caesar salad for a touch of theatre.
Fil Rouge - daily changing souffle flavours and Lobster Thermidor.
Sakura - Best sushi I have tasted and I was in Japan last year. Oh and Lobster Pad Thai.
Anthology - Italian tasting Menu - need I say more!
Emporium Marketplace – This isn’t your average buffet. Think handmade pizzas, grilled seabass and prawns, with custom sauces and chef-led stations that wouldn’t feel out of place in a gourmet market.
And don’t even get me started on the drinks. Rosé champagne by the glass (a rarity!), and an impressive selection of fine wines and craft cocktails that would satisfy even the pickiest connoisseur.
What truly elevated the dining experience, though, was the service. Effortlessly attentive, never overbearing — and always personal. By day two, the team knew my coffee order and favourite wine. It felt less like service and more like being looked after by friends.
It’s All About the Destination!
What really sets Explora apart, though, is the way they approach the itinerary. Every stop felt intentionally chosen and perfectly timed. More often than not, we were the only ship in port, making each arrival feel like our own little discovery.
Explora clearly puts thought into avoiding peak times, giving guests the luxury of quieter streets, more intimate experiences, and a real sense of connection with each place. Wandering through Paros and Lesvos, both refreshingly untouched by mass tourism, felt like stepping back in time — in the best possible way.
There’s something magical about arriving somewhere that still feels authentic — where the rhythm is slower, the smiles are genuine, and the scenery isn’t blocked by crowds holding selfie sticks.
Final Thoughts: A New State of Mind.
Let’s just say — this wasn’t just a cruise, it was a new kind of ocean experience. Thoughtful, elevated, and completely redefined. From the food to the service, from the design to the destinations, Explora I delivers on her promise — and then some.
I came away not just relaxed, but reset — in the best possible way.
